Microsoft Edge, a genius breakthrough for browser software domination

Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Edge is a web browser developed by Microsoft that was first released in 2015. It is available on Windows 10, Windows 11, and other operating systems such as macOS, iOS, and Android. Edge is designed to be faster, more secure, and more modern than its predecessor, Internet Explorer.

A.    Differences from its predecessor, Internet Explorer

Here are some key differences between Microsoft Edge and its predecessor, the Internet Explorer:

·       User Interface: The user interface of Edge is sleeker and more modern than Internet Explorer. Edge has a minimalist design with fewer buttons and menus, making it more user-friendly. Edge also supports extensions, whereas Internet Explorer did not.

·       Performance: Edge is faster and more efficient than Internet Explorer, due in part to the fact that it uses a new rendering engine called EdgeHTML. Edge also has better support for modern web technologies like HTML5 and CSS3.

·       Security: Edge is more secure than Internet Explorer. It includes features such as SmartScreen, which helps protect against phishing and malware, and Windows Defender Application Guard, which isolates Edge from the rest of the operating system and protects against attacks.

·       Compatibility: Although Edge is designed to be compatible with most websites, some older websites and applications may not work as well with Edge as they did with Internet Explorer. As a result, Microsoft included a compatibility mode in Edge that allows it to emulate Internet Explorer.

Comparing to Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge is a more modern, efficient, and secure browser than its predecessor. It has a better user interface, faster performance, and stronger security features. While some websites and applications may not work as well with Edge as they did with Internet Explorer, Edge includes a compatibility mode to address this issue.

B.    Versions of Edge

Microsoft Edge has had several versions since its initial release in 2015. Here's a brief overview of some of the major versions of Edge and their superiorities:

1.       EdgeHTML-based Edge: The initial version of Edge was based on the EdgeHTML rendering engine. It was faster, more efficient, and more secure than Internet Explorer, and had a minimalist design with a focus on simplicity and user experience. EdgeHTML-based Edge also introduced features like Cortana integration, web note-taking, and a reading mode.

2.       Chromium-based Edge: In 2019, Microsoft announced that it was rebuilding Edge using the open-source Chromium browser engine, which is also used by Google Chrome. This new version of Edge, released in early 2020, brought several improvements and advantages over the previous version, including:

  • Greater compatibility with websites and web applications, as Chromium is a widely-used browser engine.
  • Access to the Google Chrome Web Store, which has a large library of browser extensions.
  • Support for Progressive Web Apps (PWAs), which are web applications that can be installed on a device like a native app.
  • Improved performance, including faster startup times and better battery life.

3.       Edge for Business: Microsoft also offers a version of Edge specifically designed for enterprise use. Edge for Business includes additional features such as group policy management, Internet Explorer mode, and app compatibility tools.

4.       Edge on Linux: In 2020, Microsoft released a version of Edge for Linux, which offers Linux users a fast, modern, and secure browser that integrates with the Microsoft ecosystem.

In summary, Microsoft Edge has evolved over time to become a more powerful and versatile browser. The Chromium-based version of Edge, in particular, offers superior compatibility, performance, and features, while Edge for Business provides additional tools and capabilities for enterprise use.

C.    What makes it as a genius breakthrough?

Microsoft Edge 2019 was built using the same core technology of Google Chrome, but with the trusted security of Microsoft. This is a genius action taken by Microsoft to override all the limitation that surrounding the Internet Explorer and the prior Edge browser. This version of Edge is extremely get more faster than the prior Edge and other browsers, including Chrome and Firefox. And by the year 2020, Microsoft Edge surpassed Firefox as second most popular browser.

Another genius step that Microsoft has taken is by making Bing Search Engine as the default search engine in Edge browser. And, as Microsoft Edge is a default software browser in a computer that powered with Windows Operating system, its popularity will keep on growing. Besides, it also has new features such as Collections, Vertical Tabs, and Immersive Reader help users organize and get the most of time while browsing.

And the best part is, by 2023, Bing Search Engine in Edge browser, by default, will be powered with Artificial Intelligent (AI) tools which will enable this browser not only showing the search result, but also could handle communications with its user to describe and summarize the search result just like ChatGPT did today.
